10 signs of low testosterone in men over 30

    Last updated

Testosterone levels can change with age and overall health. These symptoms can also have other causes, so they are a reason to discuss your health with a doctor rather than a diagnosis of low testosterone.

    The classic ten

    1. Low libido — the single most predictive symptom.
    2. Erectile difficulty, particularly morning erections becoming rare.
    3. Persistent fatigue that sleep doesn't fix.
    4. Loss of muscle mass or strength despite training.
    5. Increase in body fat, especially around the waist.
    6. Low mood, irritability, or "flatness".
    7. Poor concentration or brain fog.
    8. Reduced motivation and drive at work.
    9. Sleep disturbance or feeling unrested.
    10. Hot flushes or sweats (less common, but distinctive).

Three or more = worth checking

Australian guidelines suggest investigating when several symptoms cluster. A two-minute screen like the ADAM questionnaire formalises this — and gives your GP something concrete to act on.

    What's next?

If symptoms point that way, a bulk billed hormone blood test is the next step. Diagnosis is never based on symptoms alone.

The ADAM symptom check shows whether your symptoms may be worth discussing with a doctor. You can also request a callback to get matched with a men's health doctor at a partner clinic, by telehealth or in person, for an assessment.
