About the QML Pathology network
QML Pathology is a Queensland-based member of the Sonic Healthcare group, with collection centres across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Townsville, Cairns and regional Queensland.
Many QML collection centres sit inside or beside general practices, so you can often have blood taken straight after the appointment where you got the request form.
Step by step
- See a GP and describe your symptoms. Our free ADAM assessment gives you a printable summary to bring.
- Ask for total testosterone plus SHBG, LH, FSH and prolactin — the standard first-line workup.
- Book or walk in to a QML Pathology collection centre early in the morning.
- Repeat the test on a second morning; a single low reading is not a diagnosis.
- Review both results with your doctor. Our results explainer covers what the numbers mean.
What it costs
The testosterone assay itself is generally bulk billed when your doctor requests it to investigate suspected androgen deficiency. Costs appear when a test falls outside Medicare criteria, when extra hormones are added privately, or when the GP consultation itself is not bulk billed. See our testosterone test cost guide and bulk billing guide for the detail.
Public vs private collection
QML Pathology is a private provider operating under Medicare. That is not the same as paying privately — most patients pay nothing for the assay. We compare the pathways in public vs private pathology.
People also ask
Do I need a referral for a testosterone test at QML Pathology?+
Yes. QML Pathology, like every Australian pathology provider, requires a request form from a GP, specialist or nurse practitioner before it can collect and test a testosterone sample.
Does QML Pathology bulk bill testosterone blood tests?+
When your doctor writes the request under a Medicare-eligible item — investigating symptoms of possible androgen deficiency — the testosterone assay is usually bulk billed. Tests requested outside those criteria, or add-ons your doctor marks as private, attract an out-of-pocket fee.
What time should I go to a QML Pathology collection centre?+
Between 7am and 10am. Testosterone peaks in the morning, and Australian guidance is to measure it early in the day, ideally fasting, on two separate mornings before drawing any conclusion.
How long do QML Pathology testosterone results take?+
Testosterone results usually reach the requesting doctor within 1–2 business days. Results go to the requesting doctor, who releases them to you — collection centre staff cannot interpret or hand over results.
Can I choose a different lab to the one on my form?+
Usually yes. A request form is generally portable between providers in Australia, though some doctors have preferred labs for result delivery into their software. Ask your practice before switching.
