Poor sleep and low testosterone: the two-way link
Poor sleep and low testosterone reinforce each other. Untangling cause from effect starts with a morning blood test and, often, a sleep study.
Why sleep matters for testosterone
Most of a man's daily testosterone is produced during REM sleep. Short sleep (under 6 hours) drops testosterone by 10–15% within a week. Sleep fragmentation from apnoea, alcohol, or shift work has the same effect.
The Australian work-up
- Take the free ADAM screen and the STOP-BANG sleep apnoea screen.
- Morning fasting bloods: testosterone, SHBG, LH, FSH, FBC, TSH.
- If you score high on STOP-BANG or your partner reports apnoeas, request a referral for an in-lab or home sleep study.
- If confirmed low T after sleep apnoea is treated, endocrinology referral for PBS-subsidised TRT.
People also ask
Does low testosterone cause poor sleep?+
Yes. Low testosterone is associated with reduced sleep efficiency and more night wakings. The relationship is bidirectional — poor sleep also lowers testosterone.
Should I get tested for sleep apnoea before TRT?+
Yes. Untreated severe obstructive sleep apnoea can worsen with TRT, and is itself a major cause of low testosterone. A sleep study is recommended if you snore, witness apnoeas, or wake unrefreshed.
Can better sleep affect testosterone?+
Sleep and testosterone are linked. Treating sleep apnoea and getting enough regular sleep may help some men, but results vary. A doctor can assess your sleep and arrange a sleep study if needed.
